Journal #4- Chapters 10-11 from the persepctive of Jem

It started out a normal day, Atticus was finally 50. Which normally isnt the best for him because no adult wants to get older, but we all have to go through it sometime. The fact is about Atticus is that most of my friends at school all have fun parents who work outside of an office and always play around. Atticus was one of those parents who had just sat around in his office working 24/7 instead of playing around he read his book. When he was reading it was like he was so inaudible, and we were just invisible to him and he was to interested in his book. I've always wondered what he would be like if he coudl put his book down and come and play outside with me and Scout.
Anyways me and Scout had gone outside to go play around because we really had nothing else to do. So we had gone outside, and in the distance we actually saw a dog walking around like something was wrong, I told Scout and we noticed that it was Tim Johnson. We took a closer look at him and we thought he almost looked sick so me and Scout ran in the house to Calpurnia. We went straight to Calpurnia and told her about Tim Johnson she did not believe us at first but we called her outside and she looked closely and stared. We were wondering what she was thinking all of a sudden she ran inside the house saying Mad dog, Mad dog! We followed her, she started making calls to everyone in the street, as soon as me and Scout looked out our window we saw every door and window close up, leaving the streets bare. We went back to Cal and she was trying to find the Radley's number and we said they dont have a number, never did. She said she had to warn them so she ran down the street to the Radley place and went and banged on their door. Yelling, Mr Radley, mad dog on the loose mad dog on the loose. Me and Scout both new that they wouldn't ever answer. As soon as possible Mr Tate the towns sheriff pulled up with Atticus.
The sheriff spotted the "mad dog" and got his rifle out but he didn't shoot it himself instead he gave it to atticus? Me and Scout were both thinking of what was going on, and we both knew he wasnt going to but instead he aimed it at Tim Johnson and pulled the lever and shot. Me and Scout were in so much shock from this, Atticus was walking towards the dog, we followed but yet he told us to stop right there and go back to the house. He acted like us going towards the house would put us in great peril. After this we went to speak to Ms Maudie about this, she said you didnt know that your dad was once called one-shot-Finch. Me and Scout were both so confused about the story she told us about him being an awesome shooter. Scout seemed excited about this for some reason. I asked if she was ok she said that she was going to tell all her comtemporaries about this, I yelled at her saying no you can't do this, if he wanted us to know he would have told us.
A few weeks after me and Scout wanted to walk to the town to get a few things, I was going to be nice to Scout and buy her this beton that she has always wanted. On our way there we had to pass by Mrs. Dubose's house, the meanest lady I have ever witnessed. We were walking on our way and saw her on her porch ofcourse Scout said "Hey Mrs. Dubose" she gave her a rude look and a rude response along with that. I dont know what was wrong with her but she seemed to hate us, she always said things like "dont contradict me," I mean we never went against her. We were always at our sweetest with her. So I just put it in the back of my head and went along with Scout to go buy her things.
When we went to downtown, she picked out her beton and I got my things and we were off back to the house. When we passed by Mrs Dubose's house I stood there for a second looked at her house took Scout's beton and started wacking at her bushes. I honestly don't know why I did this, she just made me so mad from how she treats us I wacked them till they were completely destroyed, then I just walked away.
When we were at the the house I heard Atticus walk in and yell my name out like he had known what happened. I went to him and he asked me did you do that to Mrs. Dubose's lawn and I said the truth and said yes I did he asked why and I yet again gave him the truth. He told me to go apologize so I did, she told me that for some reason I had to go read for her for a month and that I had to clean the mess. So I did as she said and went off.
The next day me and Scout walked over to Mrs. Dubose's house, Jesse answered the door and let us right in so we stepped in, we were surprised by the sweet smell of her house. Over in the back we saw Mrs. Dubose lying in her bed asking us to come over and read to her. While I was reading she would sometimes correct me if I spoke the word wrong or forget something to say. But as I kept going on about this but she stopped correcting me eventually. Weeks went past and it was almost time to leave her house. As it was the last day to come I had finished my last sentance and I was off, the only thing she said was "that'll be all."
About a month later me and Scout were inside the house doing our usual, playing games inside the house, and Atticus had gotten a phone call and dashed right out the door. He was gone for a little while and as he came back he came in slowly and me and Scout had to ask where he went. He said that he had gone over to Mrs. Dubose's place and we both asked why and he said that she had passed away. Me and Scout had nothing really to say to this, but Atticus did he said that she was almost inconspicuous in her own way and didnt really want to give anything to anyone in her will. But that was just Mrs. Dubose.

I really liked how you talked about Atticus getting older and how he worked 24/7. I also liked how you talked about Scout and Jem going downtown to buy Scout's toy and then using it to destroy Mrs. Dubose's flowers. So I think that you did a really good job on forcing on how Jem and Scout went over to Mrs. Dubose's house and how horrible it was.
